Aspirin was already known to be effective for reduce the risk of colon cancer. Dutch scientists now claim that this analgesic would also improve the survival of people with cancer of the digestive tract, by doubling their life expectancy. Their study, involving more than 14,000 people, showed that people with this type of cancer and who took regular doses of aspirin were twice as likely to be alive four years after treatment. .
According to Dr Martine Frouws of Leiden University in the Netherlands, the impact of aspirin on the survival of people with cancer of the colon, rectum or esophagus has been observed after adjusting for factors such as gender, age, stage of cancer, treatments, and other medical conditions that may have influenced death rates.
“By studying the characteristics of tumors in patients for whom aspirin has been beneficial, we should be able to identify those who might benefit from such treatment in the future. Since aspirin is a drug off-patent, cheap, with relatively few side effects, it could have a big impact on healthcare, she explained.
