It is indeed a basic rule: never mix together the household products. “There are enough mixtures of substances in a single product not to do more yet”, notes Philippe Perrin, eco-nurse. When added together, certain chemical compounds lead to the formation of other harmful substances, such as bleach and acid which release chlorine, a gas whose inhalation can cause irritation of the respiratory tract with , at the end of the day, cough, runny nose, weeping eyes and itchy throat, even shortness of breath and breathing pain. Likewise, we avoid heating certain products (bleach, for example), unless this is specified in the instructions for use.
The cocktail effect
The cupboard for household products often has around ten: floor product, window cleaner, dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent, kitchen cleaner, anti-lime product, toilet cleaner, deodorant … Or, in the end, a multitude of chemical compounds that add up in theindoor air, not to mention the emissions of pollutants from furniture, paints and floor coverings. This is called the “cocktail effect”. “We are bathed in a cocktail of chemicals whose effects we do not really know. The effects of each substance add up and can even multiply, ”analyzes Philippe Perrin, eco-nurse.
