While CBD shops are opening up everywhere in France, it has just been shown that cannabidiol would be effective in reducing burnout.
- A clinical trial on caregivers involved in the health crisis showed that the use of CBD was accompanied by a decrease in their emotional fatigue
CBD would be effective in fighting against severe fatigue, according to a new clinical trial published in JAMA. To reach this conclusion, the researchers studied the effects of cannabidiol on a cohort of 120 caregivers managing the health consequences of Covid-19 on a daily basis.
A reduction in fatigue after one month
“Is cannabidiol (CBD) therapy able to reduce the symptoms of emotional exhaustion and burnout in healthcare professionals working on the front line with patients with Covid-19?”, wondered the scientists in the preamble.
For 28 days, participants were randomized to receive either traditional fatigue therapy or standard care coupled with CBD consumption (300mg). Conclusion: In the group of cannabidiol consumers, the scores of the emotional exhaustion scale of the Maslach Burnout Inventory decreased significantly on the 14th day, on the 21st day and on the 28th day.
Serious side effects
Five participants who received the combination of CBD and standard care, however, suffered from serious adverse effects, even though they fully recovered after stopping cannabidiol.
Our results indicate “that CBD can effectively reduce symptoms of emotional exhaustion and burnout in frontline healthcare professionals”, although it is necessary to assess the benefit/risk ratio before prescribing cannabidiol to patients because of the adverse effects observed, conclude the authors.
