The number of cancer cases and cancer deaths is still on the rise around the world, according to a report. Lung cancer is the most common and the deadliest.
Cancer continues to grow at a sustained rate around the world, reports the World Cancer Report 2014, revealed on February 3 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Despite advances in treatment, the number of new cases is still increasing.
In 2012, the number of new cancer cases reached 14 million. Deaths from the disease numbered 8.2 million. In total, it will have cost States 1.16 billion dollars. And the progress is not about to slow down. According to IARC estimates, the number of new cases and deaths is expected to increase by almost 60% within 20 years. Like last year, lung cancer is the most common (13% of diagnoses) and the most fatal (19% of cancer-related deaths). It is followed by breast cancer (12%) and colorectal cancer (10%) in terms of prevalence. The two other most fatal cancers are liver (9%) and stomach (8%) cancers.
These forms of cancer affect all countries. But in developing countries, it’s double full, reveals the IARC report. In addition to suffering more and more from these cancers linked to the modern way of life, the population is also exposed to cancers linked to viral infections (cancer of the cervix or cancer of the liver). Africa, Asia and Latin America thus account for 6 out of 10 cancer cases and 7 out of 10 cancer deaths. Problems of access to treatment and early detection make the situation even worse.
