I often don’t feel bowel movements, especially when walking. Can I do something about it with food? I also have a slight prolapse.
Joris Bartstra, journalist with a medical degree.
Incontinence is an embarrassing problem and I understand that you prefer simple advice. Unfortunately, it is also usually a complex problem. Dietary advice and ‘stopping’ medication (such as loperamide) can sometimes help with chronic diarrhea, but there is a good chance that this will cause a blockage. After that, ‘overflow diarrhoea’ develops: it starts bubbling and fermenting, you get abdominal pain and then ‘the cork comes off the bottle’ and an enormous stream of diarrhea starts. The prolapse probably plays a role. Pelvic floor physiotherapy is the first treatment for this. It is best to discuss what is going on with your doctor and make a plan together.
