Whether or not to breastfeed and for how long is a very personal choice for every mother, but there are factors that can influence her decision. Researchers have looked at the socio-demographic, physical, mental and social characteristics that would influence the duration of breastfeeding.
THE’study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences took the results of 27 researches on the subject to compile them.
Breastfeed for at least six months
The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding until the infant is six months old. Young mothers, with a low level of education, or those who return to work 12 weeks after birth are more inclined to stop breastfeeding early. The same goes for mothers who have given birth by caesarean section and those who have difficulty providing milk to their child.
Scientists therefore recommend training healthcare professionals to detect these physical and social signals and to react in a more personalized way. Specialized interventions with target groups at risk of stopping breastfeeding quickly could prevent this behavior.
