Everything for comfort
If you look at the commercials in the magazines, brochures and on TV, it seems as if the mattress and cot is completely out of favor. And indeed: of the ten beds sold, seven are now a box spring.
The comfort and luxury of a hotel, right at home: that is the appearance of the box spring. The fact that most hotels have box springs does not seem to have anything to do with luxury, but mainly with convenience. The box spring is high and therefore easy to make up.
Spring box spring
A box spring consists of several parts. The lower part is an upholstered box made of wood or metal. In that box is a frame with Bonell springs (also called biconical springs) or pocket springs. Bonell springs are connected to each other, so that the whole feels somewhat movable. Pocket springs are individually packed in a textile bag. Because the springs move separately from each other, the comfort is somewhat greater.
Mattress box spring
The mattress is placed on the frame of the box spring. This is usually a pocket spring mattress, but an innerspring mattress with Bonell springs is also a possibility. It can also be a (natural) latex mattress. The choice of mattress is a very personal one: so always get good advice.
Top box spring
The box spring can also be supplemented with a topper, also called a mattress topper. Such a topper is 5 to 10 centimeters thick and lies on top of the mattress. Some like this extra comfort layer, others don’t like it at all. Some box spring combinations sell the topper as part of the total combination, but that is not always the case.
Cot with slatted or mesh base
Would you rather have a ‘normal’ bed? That is of course also possible. A normal bed has a conversion: the cot. This cot is usually made of wood, sometimes iron. The bed base is located in the cot: a slatted base or a mesh base. The slats of the slatted base have springs and therefore give pressure. A slatted base can thus be divided into pressure zones: the part where the shoulders are then gives a different pressure than the part at the height of the feet. A mesh bottom does not do this. The mesh base does score the best when it comes to moisture permeability.
Which mattress on which floor?
A foam mattress or latex mattress is usually placed on a slatted base. A latex mattress with a high percentage of natural latex is preferable, because natural latex wicks away moisture well. On a mesh base, a pocket or innerspring mattress is a better choice. This is because such mattresses give back pressure. A pocket or innerspring mattress on a slatted base is not a good idea: the slatted base already provides counter pressure. In addition, there is the risk that the springs of the mattress ‘sink between the slats’.
