According to American researchers, a daily dose of baking soda could help reduce inflammation caused by autoimmune diseases. But this product, which works miracles for the maintenance of our homes, has many other health benefits as well. Taking a sitz bath in cold water in which you have diluted 2 tablespoons of baking soda helps relieve hemorrhoids. Or a pinch of baking soda placed directly on the canker sores helps relieve pain.
1. Bicarbonate cleans up inflamed gums
Disinfectant, antibacterial, bicarbonate relieves and treats gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums caused by an accumulation of dental plaque (tartar). The gums are then swollen, red, even painful to the touch.
How to do ?
Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 2 drops of hydrogen peroxide (stabilized at 10 volumes) to obtain a thick paste. Apply to the toothbrush and massage gently starting from the gum towards the tooth (therefore from pink to white). To be used with each brushing in replacement of the usual toothpaste.
- Extra advice: it can also be used to whiten teeth, as its small, very fine grains act as a mild abrasive. Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of white clay, a little water and 2 drops of peppermint essential oil (for taste). Do not exceed 2 to 3 brushings per week.
2. Baking Soda Relieves Heartburn
With a pH of 8.4, baking soda is slightly alkaline and neutralizes the effect of acidic substances. It thus relieves the excess hydrochloric acid present in the stomach, which is the cause of heartburn. Please note, due to its high salt content, internally administered bicarbonate is not recommended for people with heart problems and those suffering from high blood pressure.
How to do ?
As soon as pain appears, drink a glass of water mixed with 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. To be renewed twice a day if necessary.
- Extra advice: in case of stomach ache or of acid reflux, avoid red meat, dairy products and those that are excessively sweet (sodas, candies, cakes, etc.), as they are acidifying. If symptoms persist for more than three days, seek medical attention.
3. Bicarbonate is a natural deodorant
Baking soda absorbs the moisture associated with perspiration and limits the proliferation of bacteria, which cause bad odors, thanks to its bactericidal properties.
How to do ? Apply a little baking soda to the armpit with a cotton ball or by hand and massage lightly. Renew if necessary during the day. For foot baths, dilute 1 tablespoon of baking soda in the equivalent of a small basin of water and immerse the feet for about 10 minutes. Dry carefully.
- Extra advice: to deodorize and disinfect the inside of shoes, sprinkle generously with white powder then leave to act overnight. The next day, shake the shoes to remove the surplus.
4. Bicarbonate soothes insect bites
The alkaline power of bicarbonate makes it a perfect remedy to soothe the itching and irritation caused by a mosquito, chigger or ant bite.
How to do ?
Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1/3 of a tablespoon of water to form a thick paste. Apply the paste to the insect bite as a poultice and cover it with a strip of gauze or cling film. Leave on for about 20 minutes then remove the poultice with a damp cloth. Rinse off the rest of the paste left on the skin with water. To be renewed up to twice a day.
- Extra advice: baking soda contains sodium which may slightly sting the skin when applied. Do not use more than two days in a row.
Precautions to take with baking soda
Used in recommended doses, baking soda is safe for humans (over 6 years old) and pets. Corn excess bicarbonate is to be avoided! We don’t brush our teeth every day with baking soda (unless expressly recommended by the dentist, in the case of gingivitis, for example), we don’t drink a large glass of it after each meal to digest either… In short, we learn to use it wisely and in reasonable quantities.
Although no toxicity has been recognized to date, it is contraindicated for some people :
- Heart people.
- People who suffer from high blood pressure.
- People who have blood circulation problems should not consume the recipes internally without first taking medical advice.
- Children under 6 are deprived of bicarbonate; its antacid effect is not recommended for them.
- Pregnant women should check with their doctor before using it.
