The A4 is one of the pillars of the Audi range. With a know-how of more than half a century, started with the Audi 80 of 1972, the manufacturer with the rings persists and signs with a tenth version of its premium family, which will arrive in the summer of 2023. , without further ado, all its secrets.
If for generalist manufacturers the carrots are cooked in terms of family sedans (segment D), for premium brands success is always there. And especially for the German trio Audi, BMW and Mercedes, where the A4, 3 Series and C-Class retain many aficionados. That is why the next and tenth generation of the Audi A4, known internally under the code B10 and which will be officially unveiled in the summer of 2023, is eagerly awaited by both buyers and the competition. Impatient, the latter wonders what innovations, both technical and cosmetic, she will bring. Let’s not wait and discover now the technological treats of the future Audi A4.
A slightly larger A4
As usual, the Audi A4 will be offered in sedan and station wagon (Audi A4 before). In terms of style, the car will retain classic three-volume proportions. In detail, the wheelbase will increase by a few centimeters, so that passengers sitting in the back seat are less embarrassed at the armholes. The total length of the car will therefore be increased. For the record, the current Audi A4 (type B9) launched in 2015, then restyled in 2019, is based on a wheelbase of 2.82 m for a total size reaching 4.73 m. As you can imagine, once again the designers of the brand with the rings have not upset the lines of a model which remains one of the pillars of the range. They proceeded with subtle touches.
We can thus note a widened and lowered grille which accentuates the seat of the car. The side air intakes are reduced, while the lower air intake is larger. The headlights are refined but do not renounce either Full LED technology or matrix lighting. The Audi A6 e-tron concept car, presented in the spring of 2021, is in a way the inspiration.
A much nicer cover!
Ultimately, the main innovation is the arrival of a so-called coachbuilder bonnet, which creates a “soft nose” at the front facilitating repair in the event of an accident. In profile, the bonnet cutout is no longer visible since it is now located on the top of the wing. This rewarding layout also improves aerodynamics and airflow. Everything to please! Fittings that appeared on the current Peugeot 508 in 2018. At the rear, the essential light strip that characterizes the models of the higher ranges (Audi A6, A7 Sportback and A8) makes its appearance in the A4 family.
It will still take a little patience to discover the interior of the car, but the layout of the virtual cockpit could be reviewed in depth in order to give pride of place to digital and do without buttons as much as possible. At Audi, as elsewhere, the designers who shape the interiors have more latitude and must take into account technological advances in terms of displays and driving aids.
Diesel is back in fashion?
Under the hood of the new Audi A4, light and rechargeable hybrid engines will be present. However, the Ingolstadt firm does not give up diesel: it has its parade. Engineers have developed a block able to drink in hydrotreated vegetable oil or HVO (acronym for “Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil”). This fuel of 100% renewable origin is a synthetic paraffinic diesel made from sustainable vegetable oils or by reprocessing waste (animal fats, cooking oils, residual oils, etc.). This biofuel, which has the same chemical structure as a standard fuel, already meets the Euro 7 antipollution standards expected in 2027. For now, it is the V6 3.0 TDI that can run on HVO. Subsequently, other engines will convert to it, like the four-cylinder 2.0 TDI.
