Three quarters of food for babies, especially those made from rice still contain an illegal level of inorganic arsenic, according to results of a study published in the medical journal PLOS ONE. However, babies are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of arsenic. They can prevent the development of IQ and the immune system.
Researchers at Queen’s University Belfast in Ireland compared the level of arsenic in urine samples among breastfed infants or fed with specialty foods before and after weaning. A higher concentration of arsenic was observed in infants who were not breastfed, especially among those who consumed non-dairy formulas, such as those fortified with rice used for infants intolerant to dairy products.
Most rice-based baby foods contain arsenic
This study found that almost 75% of rice products specifically marketed for infants and young children contained more than the standard level of arsenic stipulated by EU law.
“This research has shown that babies are exposed to illegal levels of arsenic despite European Union regulations to specifically address this health challenge. Babies are particularly sensitive to the deleterious health effects of arsenic.” , explained Professor Meharg, lead author of the study and professor of plant science at Queen’s.
Easy steps to implement
There would be no excuse for these manufacturers to sell such dangerous food products containing this carcinogenic substance. Because, according to the researchers, simple measures can be put in place to significantly reduce the arsenic in these products.
“Manufacturers should be held responsible for selling products that do not meet the required European standard. Companies should publish the levels of arsenic in their products to prevent those with illegal amounts from being sold. will allow consumers to make an informed decision, aware of the risks associated with the consumption of products containing arsenic “.
