Bleeding gums are not a symptom to be taken lightly: whether it occurs spontaneously (for example: when eating) or only when brushing your teeth, gingivorrhagia (that’s its name doctor) can be the witness of a very common periodontal disease – gingivitis.
Gingivitis, kezako? Gingivitis corresponds to an inflammation of the gums, which is triggered when the bacteria contained in tartar (what becomes of dental plaque when it is not properly eliminated) “attack” the gum tissue. Result: the gum bleeds, is swollen (oedematous) and takes on a reddish/purplish color.
It is absolutely essential to make an appointment with your doctor when you notice gingival bleeding. First, because untreated gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, a pathology that can lead to tooth loss and increases the risk of developing a chronic disease (a cardiovascular disorder, for example). Then because, to eliminate tartar, there is only one solution: descaling.
110 mg of vitamin C daily for healthy gums
Bleeding gums: it’s not just gingivitis! It’s good to know: according to a recent study conducted by the University of Washington (in the United States), the lack of vitamins could also lead to gingival bleeding. The American researchers thus reviewed medical data concerning 9,350 patients: they found that, in some cases, bleeding gums (but also bleeding from the eyes) were associated with a vitamin C deficiency.
It is indeed known: in addition to its role in the immune system, vitamin C (also called “ascorbic acid”) is essential for the synthesis of collagen, this substance which allows the development of healthy gums…
As a reminder, the recommended daily intake of vitamin C is 110 mg per day. The best sources of vitamin C are blackcurrant (181 mg per 100 g), parsley and thyme (respectively 177 mg and 160 mg / 100 g), red pepper and yellow pepper (cooked or raw), red fruits (raspberries, strawberries, currants…) or kiwi (82 mg / 100 g).
