The Minister of Social Affairs and Health, Marisol Touraine, sets out to attack the overuse of antibiotics, after receiving the report from Dr. Jean Carlet on this consumption of drugs. Bad pupil of Europe, France always takes more antibiotics : 30% more than the European average and almost three times more than the Netherlands, Sweden or Norway, according to Dr Carlet’s report.
“For the first time, an Inserm study made it possible to measure the impact of this overconsumption on public health” declared the Minister when submitting the report. “We now know that nearly 160,000 patients contract an infection with a so-called multi-resistant germ each year, and that nearly 13,000 patients die directly from it. 13,000 deaths per year are gigantic. We have to do it. know these numbers because it is a vital issue. “
Faced with the magnitude of these figures, Marisol Touraine today calls for the complete mobilization of public authorities to fight against this phenomenon in order to “reduce the overall consumption of antibiotics by 25% and reduce the mortality linked to antimicrobial resistance to below the 10,000 death mark per year by 2017 ”.
To do this, the Minister plans to limit the duration of the initial prescription of antibiotics to 7 days. She also plans to rely on social networks to pass for “to pass from a logic antibiotics, with some exceptions to a logic no antibiotics, with some exceptions “.
Finally, the Minister will propose during the next G7 health, which is to be held in Berlin in a few days, that the World Health Organization (WHO) be entrusted with the role of integrator of all initiatives in the area of antimicrobial resistance.
