The consumption antibiotics continues to grow in France. This excessive consumption is one of the causes of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. This is why the Ministry of Health is today launching a new communication campaign, with the aim of reducing the consumption of antibiotics by 25% by 2020.
We all have in mind the slogan “Antibiotics are not automatic”. Launched in 2002 to inform the public about the uselessness of prescribing these drugs in the face of certain viral diseases, the slogan made an impression and bore fruit. But since 2007, antibiotics are again seen as a remedy that “take care of everything right away“and their consumption is started to rise again.
The Ministry of Health is therefore counting on a new slogan, “They are precious, let’s use them better”to raise patients’ awareness of the consequences of overconsumption, which makes France the 4th European country most addicted to these drugs. “This is to highlight the precious nature of antibiotics, to insist to patients and health professionals on the fact that consuming too much is to create resistance” emphasizes the ministry in The Parisian.
