The brain and the kidneys are two organs that share structural and mechanical characteristics, which makes them susceptible to vascular damage. Belgian researchers have thus discovered that the presence of albumin in the urine that indicate the presence of kidney problems would also indicate an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.
According to Dr. Kay Deckers, from the University of Maastricht in Belgium, the risk would increase by 35% in people who have albumin in the urine. To reach this conclusion, Dr. Deckers and his team studied the medical records of more than 27,800 patients.
“It’s possible that kidney damage affects the brain, but we need more research to take into account other risk factors like high blood pressure“ emphasizes the doctor.
