Do not consume more than 10 glasses per week, drink a maximum of 2 glasses daily and keep days in the week without alcohol.
“For your health, alcohol is a maximum of 2 glasses a day, and not every day”. This formula summarizes the new alcohol consumption benchmarks developed by Public health France and INCa.
The French are far from respecting these benchmarks
The two health agencies have carried out scientific expertise work which has made it possible to set new benchmarks for consumption at lower risk when drinking alcohol. It is therefore necessary not to consume more than 10 glasses per week, drink a maximum of 2 glasses daily and preserve days in the week without alcohol.
Currently, the French are far from respecting these benchmarks. Nearly a quarter of French people aged 18 to 75 exceed at least one of the 3 benchmarks, men are more affected by this excess (33%) than women (14%) and the youngest drink more intensely than the oldest, whose consumption is more regular.
41,000 deaths per year
“Our objective is to allow the French to make an informed choice of consumption with less risk for their health. Without denying the dimension pleasure which can be associated with the consumption of alcohol, this requires making known the risks associated with alcohol, disseminating to all new consumption benchmarks and inviting the French to reflect on their consumption”, underlines François Bourdillon , Director General of Public Health France.
Contrary to popular belief, the health risks of alcohol consumption exist from the first daily drink. Alcohol is the cause of many diseases (cerebral hemorrhage, cancers, hypertension, etc.) and is now one of the main causes of avoidable mortality with 41,000 attributable deaths per year.
Assess consumption
From March 26 to April 14, 2019, the Ministry of Solidarity and Health and Public Health France are launching an information campaign to remind everyone that all alcohol consumption involves risks, and to promote new benchmarks. A new tool is also available to everyone on the site alcohol-info-service.fr to assess its consumption and take stock of the risks involved.
