The American comedian and actress underwent surgery to relieve the pain associated with endometriosis from which she has suffered for several years.
- There are three main types of endometriosis: superficial, ovarian or deep pelvic.
- In a third of cases, endometriosis does not develop or even regresses, either thanks to treatment (medical or surgical) or spontaneously.
“So many people don’t even know the word endometriosis, yet more than 1 in 10 women have it“: the day after an operation to remove the uterus, Amy Schumer wishes to warn about this disease. In two videos published on her instagram account, she talks about her operation. “My womb is outside of me she explained Sunday, September 19. The doctor found 30 endometriosis ‘stitches’ which he removed. He also removed my appendix that endometriosis had attacked. There was a lot of blood inside the uterus and I have, you know, pains and then I have like gas.” Suffering from endometriosis for several years, she reminds us that the disease is “really painful and disabling“.”You don’t have to live with that”she says to her fans.

What is endometriosis?
This pathology is characterized by the presence of tissues similar to those of the uterine lining outside the uterus. It causes severe pain, especially during menstruation and may be responsible for infertility. In some people, the disease may be asymptomatic. The EndoFrance association reminds us that it is complex: “on even custom to say that there is not one but “of” endometriosis because this disease does not develop in the same way from one person to another… There are no certainties concerning endometriosis except that it takes different forms in different places in different proportions from person to person. ” Even if endometriosis is better known today, the diagnosis can take time: it takes on average seven years to make it.
How to treat it?
After diagnosis, surgery is a second-line treatment. First, doctors first recommend taking hormonal treatment to reduce pain: the uterine cells present outside the uterus are sensitive to ovarian hormones. This type of medication can reduce pain and stabilize lesions. Nevertheless, Inserm specifies that “surgery is the only treatment that can completely remove the lesions associated with endometriosis“. It is performed in case of disabling symptoms and / or infertility. Three types of operations can be performed: a total ablation where the body and the cervix are removed, a radical where the same elements are removed as well as the ovaries and fallopian tubes, or else a subtotal where only the body of the uterus is removed.
