The snake attacked his genitals violently while he was in the toilet.
- Naja annulifera is a species of snake in the family Elapidae.
- This species of cobra lives in Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and Malawi.
It’s a vacation from which he will have taken a year to recover. While a Dutch tourist was on safari in South Africa, he was bitten by a cobra in the penis and testicles. So far, no similar case had been officially documented.
Naja annulifera
As reported by the scientific journal Urology Case Reports, the 47-year-old man was attacked by a snake of the species Naja annulifera when he was in the toilet. And while an intense burning sensation rose from his penis to his stomach, the unfortunate had to wait 3 hours to be transported by helicopter to the nearest trauma center (350 km). At this moment, “he also reported vomiting but no neurological symptoms,” specify the doctors in the case study.
They continue: “Upon arrival at the hospital, the patient was known to be hemodynamically stable, fully conscious, but had purple, swollen genitalia, indicative of scrotal necrosis*”. A whole series of treatments followed: administration of several doses of antivenom and broad-spectrum antibiotics, dialysis, surgery and placement of a drain in the genital area to help the wound heal.
Early treatment maximizes the chances of recovery
Following this horse treatment, the forties, otherwise in excellent health, was repatriated to the Netherlands. A year later, doctors found that the man was completely recovered from this unfortunate misadventure. And as something misfortune is good, if a cobra attacks a male sex again, we now know that: “genital function and esthetics have a good chance of recovering with early treatment”, write health professionals. And : “cosmetic surgery should only be performed after the acute phase”, they finish.
