Many studies have reminded us of this in recent years: walking and moving is not only good for your health, but above all it is a gesture of survival. For the World Health Organization (WHO), physical inactivity would be the 10and cause of death worldwide. However, men and women combined, 42% of the active population spends an average of 4 hours sitting each day (at the office, in public transport, at home) and 3:17 hours in front of computer or television screens.
As Professor François Carré, cardiologist and sports doctor, explains, physical inactivity has a pernicious effect and exposes us to many diseases (diabetes, overweight, musculoskeletal disorders, cancer) which can prove fatal.
And the doctor reminds us how beneficial walking can be for health. Walking for at least an hour a day reduces the risk of breast cancer in women. Walking at night lowers blood sugar and reduces the risk of suffer from diabetes. But to take advantage of the health benefits of walking and fight against the harmful effects of a sedentary lifestyle, it is better to learn to move at a fast pace (no, strolling while window shopping is not sport!) and set a goal of at least 10,000 steps per day, the recommendation of the World Health Organization. However, a recent survey conducted by an insurer shows that 80% of 18-64 year olds do not achieve this objective and that 50% of seniors even less than 5,000 steps per day.
