The technique of medically assisted procreation which consists in using the genetic material of 3 parents has recently been legally approved in Great Britain for mothers who suffer from severe mitochondrial disease (an illness caused by a mutation in their DNA).
But in Ukraine, it is to help a 34-year-old woman suffering from infertility that a specialized clinic from Kiev just used this technique.
A first baby was born in Mexico last year
To treat this young woman’s infertility, clinic director Valery Zukin and his team used this new technique to transfer DNA from both parents into a donor egg. This creates an embryo which carries the chromosomes of both parents but also the DNA of the donor. The test was successful since last January 5 a little girl was born.
It is the second infant that is born thanks to this technique. The first had been designed last year in Mexico to prevent the mother from transmitting a serious hereditary disease (Leigh syndrome) to her child.
