A glass of 20 cl per day for women, 300 cl for men, it would not hurt in the opinion of some. On the contrary, it would even be rather advisable for cardiovascular health. This is the message conveyed by Dr. Milos Taborsky, a Czech cardiologist, to the congress of the European Society of Cardiology, which is being held from August 30 to September 3, 2014, in Spain.
The conclusions of this work are rather surprising: drinking a little wine regularly would protect the cardiovascular health of consumers, provided that they do some physical exercise elsewhere. And surprise, while most studies extolling the benefits of wine target red wine, we could taste red wine as much as white wine. Lovers of the nectar of the Gods will appreciate.
For the purposes of the study, 146 people with a low to moderate cardiovascular risk were invited to drink either red wine (Pinot noir) or white wine (Chardonnay-Pinot) for a year. Men were allowed to drink one 30 cl glass per day and women one 20 cl glass per day for up to five days a week.
The results showed a notable improvement in good cholesterol (HDL) in red and white wine drinkers who exercised at least twice a week.
The winning duo for the heart?
“Combining moderate wine consumption with regular physical exercise improves markers of atherosclerosis (loss of elasticity of the arteries due to the accumulation of fatty substances, essentially bad cholesterol), which suggests that this association protects against cardiovascular disease,” explains Professor Taborsky, a cardiologist at Palacky University in the Czech Republic.
Several studies have highlighted the benefits of red wine, and more specifically resveratrol, a polyphenol contained in grapes, for treat Alzheimer’s disease, to fight against depression, or even more unusual, to fight against cavities. Conclusions more or less easy to swallow.
