Solution for neck and shoulder complaints
There are several reasons why women choose breast reduction. Some women want breasts that fit their body better in proportion, others struggle with physical complaints due to breasts that are too large and therefore want a smaller cup size.
Breast reduction can be done for several reasons. Many women find a beautiful cleavage important and feel more comfortable with a smaller cup size that fits the body better. The outerwear often falls better. For example, breasts that are too flabby can also be an aesthetic reason for breast surgery.
In addition, breast reductions are often performed when women have problems with their cup size. Large, heavy breasts can cause serious neck and back problems.
With a breast reduction, excess fat, glandular and skin tissue is removed and the breasts become smaller. The areola can also be reduced in size. A breast reduction is usually also a breast lift because the shape of the breast changes as the size changes. Breast reduction or breast correction surgery is possible up to old age, as long as the breasts are fully grown.
There are a number of surgical techniques that leave you with various scars to reduce the size, make it firmer or obtain a more beautiful shape. Based on those scars, two methods are distinguished: the anchor method and the keyhole method.
Anchor method
The anchor method is the preferred treatment for people with large breasts, from cup DD. It is a fast and reliable method for beautifying breasts. After the breast reduction, a scar in the shape of an anchor remains, hence the name. This scar runs around the areola, from the areola straight down and into the crease under the breast, from the sternum to the armpit.
Keyhole Method
The keyhole method of breast reduction refers to the size of the scar. With this breast reduction, the skin is separated from the breast tissue in such a way that less skin has to be removed so that the scar is limited. The keyhole method is not performed if a lot of breast tissue has to be removed.
areola
The scar around the areola is unavoidable, because in almost all cases the breast must also be lifted and the areola must be placed upwards. Precisely because there is a need to lift, skin is also removed. The scar around the areola is generally not sufficient for this. The scar from the areola downwards can be used for this, precisely because it generally becomes beautiful.
The keyhole method is technically more difficult and requires a lot of experience from the surgeon. Because the subcutaneous wound is somewhat larger after a breast reduction by means of the keyhole method, the chance of swelling and bruising is greater. In addition, it takes longer (six to eight weeks) to reach the final shape. In a small number of cases, a small correction of the skin in the fold under the breast has to be performed later.
Advantages of the keyhole method
• nicer shape (less flat, more projection)
• smaller scar
• less chance of nipple loss
• more likely to breastfeed later
• movements of the arms are possible again faster (after two to three days)
• shorter operation time
Combination method
It is also possible to perform a breast reduction with a combination of both surgical techniques. The combination involves making a small incision on the underside of the chest in the shape of an anchor in addition to the cut as with the keyhole method. However, the incision does not become as large as when using the anchor method. This makes the scar in the fold as small as possible and less visible.
The combination method is suitable for people where a keyhole method has been considered, but is not possible because too much tissue has to be removed. By combining both methods, it is possible to remove more breast tissue than with the keyhole method, without making a large incision in the breast crease, as with the anchor method. From cup size DD, however, the anchor method is the most suitable method for breast reduction surgery.
