Doctor Jean-Luc Jauffret takes stock of developments in breast surgery in France.
- All breast procedures show notable growth in France.
- “We see quite easily that the demand in France is not the same depending on the region,” indicates Doctor Jean-Luc Jauffret, president of SOFCEP and plastic surgeon in Marseille.
- “Currently, we are also seeing an increasingly frequent request for the removal of old implants,” he adds.
During a press conference of the French Society of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons (SOFCEP)a point was made on breast surgery.
“The demand for breast surgery evolves according to fashion and the type of silhouette highlighted on the catwalks, in magazines and on social networks,” first indicates Doctor Jean-Luc Jauffret, president of SOFCEP and plastic surgeon in Marseille.
“Schematically, we can oppose three types of requests in cosmetic breast surgery: breast reduction for breasts that are too large, breast augmentation for breasts that are too small and surgery for ptotic or drooping breasts, also called breast lift.” , he explains.
“There are also less frequent requests which concern breast asymmetries or malformations”, he adds.
“Breast augmentation remains the most common surgical procedure”
In 2022, with over 4.4 million breast procedures and an increase of 25%, all breast procedures show notable growth compared to 2021. Breast augmentation remains the most common surgical procedure among women, with 2.2 million cases and a significant increase of 29% compared to 2021. Most breast augmentations, or 54.6% of the total, are performed by 18-34 year olds.
“We see quite easily that the demand in France is not the same depending on the region. In the south of the country, we often have a demand for larger, more visible and easily noticeable breasts, which requires larger implants Elsewhere, patients favor the most natural result possible. specifies Jean-Luc Jauffret.
“A more frequent request for removal of old breast implants”
“Currently, we are also observing an increasingly frequent request for the removal of old implants. For these women, it is therefore a return to naturalness after years spent with a foreign body. Perhaps the beginning of ‘a new trend?’ asks the specialist.
“The hindsight on silicone breast implants is now more than 60 years, which allows us to be reassuring about the reliability of this technique”, he also believes.
For several months, French surgeons have had the obligation to record any intervention concerning a breast implant in a register, which now makes it possible to better monitor the women concerned. “It is restrictive but necessary to reassure patients and produce reliable statistics”concludes Jean-Luc Jauffret.
