VIDEO – A video shows a young man suffering from a particularly painful… and impressive cramp.
Have you ever seen a really big cramp? Angel Bermudez filmed it for you on Youtube. The young man took a video of his right calf as he left the gym after an intense session. Rarely, we can see his muscle contract in an uncontrolled manner and visibly very painful …
Stretch the muscle
While not all cramps are equally impressive, they are still often painful. Muscle cramps are a sudden, involuntary contraction of one or more muscles. But they can be quickly relieved with a few simple actions: stretch and massage the muscle affected by the cramp.
For example, if it is a calf cramp, lift the leg and pull the tip of the foot towards the body to lengthen the calf as much as possible. Another simple technique is to stand facing a wall, three feet away, and lean forward, leaning on the wall, with your heels on the floor.
The posture is maintained for 10 seconds to stretch the calves. The maneuver is repeated after 5 seconds of rest. Once the cramp has passed, you should try to walk slowly and then rehydrate yourself by drinking water or lightly salted water.
If the muscle pain persists after the cramp, it is possible to take paracetamol, or even an over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (or “NSAID”) (ibuprofen for example).
Recurrent cramps
Residual pain may be linked to micro-tears in the muscles that appeared during the contraction of the cramp and which will heal in a few days. When the cramps recur and have no definite cause, treatment of disabling cramps may require, if simple measures are insufficient, the use of drugs containing quinine.
Quinine is, however, only an adjunct treatment, with modest efficacy, and immuno-allergic adverse effects are sometimes observed which require discontinuation of treatment. It is therefore important to immediately report any abnormality under this treatment to your doctor.
Treatment should also be stopped if it has not improved after 4 weeks. In the event of a significant reduction in cramps, discontinuation of treatment is considered after a few months.
Magnesium supplementation can be beneficial in some cases. It can be done by eating bananas or walnuts and hazelnuts, drinking water rich in magnesium, or magnesium supplements. 15-day cures can be tested.
