A good pillow ensures the alignment of the head and the neck in order to avoid any cervical or dorsal torsion synonymous, on awakening, of stiffness, pain, even headache. Well aligned, cervical vertebrae and the head are effectively maintained. The muscles and the spine can relax and blood circulation is optimal.
The right criteria to take into account
Like the mattress, there is not a perfect pillow but as many sleepers as there are suitable pillows. To choose it, you must take into account:
• His sleeping position : according to we sleep on our backs, on the window or on the side, the thickness of the pillow must be different to ensure the correct head / neck alignment. To lie down on your stomach, put on a flat pillow (5-6 cm); on the side, on a thicker pillow (more than 9 cm), with firm comfort. On the back, it’s a matter of preference.
• His stature : the taller and more stout you are, the thicker and firmer the pillow must be to withstand the pressure of the body, especially if you sleep on your side. Thus, a person of strong build, with square shoulders and sleeping on the side should opt for a firm and thick pillow (12 cm).
• The desired comfort : flexible, medium-firm or firm, it’s a matter of preference. Follower of firm support? Choose a foam pillow. It is also the most durable and hygienic solution. Pillows filled with synthetic fibers are cheaper, but they promote perspiration. The down and goose feather provide plush comfort, perfect for people who like to feel their head buried in the pillow. Their downside: they are real mite nests.
What about the ergonomic pillow
Contrary to popular belief, it is not always the ideal pillow, especially for sleeping on your back or on your stomach. With its wave shape, it is more suitable for lying on its side, where it fills the hollow of the neck. It is a positioning pillow, rather intended for people cervical pain. Especially since in shape memory, it molds to the contours of the head for optimum support and comfort.
