The knowledge of the Dutch about digital and online security is steadily increasing. 66% of the Dutch consider their knowledge of digital and online security to be fair to very good and more than half take measures after a cyber attack, an increase compared to last year.
This and more is apparent from the annual National Cybersecurity Awareness Survey 2019, a trend survey commissioned by the NCTV and the Alert Online initiative.
The Dutch rate themselves well enough for dealing with online dangers. More than ever, the Dutch are aware of digital risks. For example, the number of people who are familiar with phishing emails is growing, Dutch people more often only visit websites with a green lock, they make backups more often and people are more secure with their passwords. Nearly a quarter use a password locker or manager to protect their passwords.
Nevertheless, the Dutch are still little familiar with common cyber risks such as botnets or social engineering. More than one in four never use a VPN connection when they connect via Wi-Fi while on the road.
About one in five find two-step verification or not automatically saving passwords too much of a barrier.
