A meditation technique called “nirodha samapatti” allows you to “cut yourself off” from your consciousness for a week.
- Meditation has been proven to have many positive health effects.
- Taken to the extreme, it would cut you off from your senses for several days.
- To arrive at these observations, researchers conducted two laboratory experiments.
A new publication indicates that some people can deliberately cut themselves off from their senses for seven days by taking the art of meditation to the extreme.
Extreme meditation: insensitivity to external stimulation
This still mysterious phenomenon, called “nirodha samapatti”, is characterized by total insensitivity to external stimulation. THE “nirodha samapatti” is also different from sleep because practitioners cannot be “awakened” of their trance state.
After emerging, meditators report experiencing “profound alterations of their consciousness”, which would result in a new “understanding” of the world around them.
Extreme meditation and the brain
To arrive at these observations, researchers conducted two laboratory experiments during which the brain activity of meditators who reached the “nirodha samapatti” was measured using electroencephalography (EEG). The results showed that the event correlated with a decrease in alpha brainwave synchronization, which scientists said “may indicate a gradual reduction in the exchange of information between different areas of the brain and ultimately shut off the meditator’s awareness.”
Further research is needed to further explore the mechanisms and effects of “nirodha samapatti” on mental and physical health.
Meditation is good for your health
Very popular in recent years in France, it has been proven that meditation has many positive effects on health, helping in particular to fight against pain, addictions, eating disorders, sleep problems, depression, stress and anxiety.
“This practice consists of connecting with oneself in the present moment. Many people are affected by their recurring thoughts. By meditating, they will be able to take a step back, because their mind is conscious but their body is not active. For To facilitate detachment, we can concentrate on what is happening inside our body, for example the heartbeat, the circulation of fluids, the freshness, the places where air enters and exits. time, we take stock of the situation, we try to see when our thoughts linked to the past or the future arrive”, explained meditation teacher Christine Lamber recently in an interview with Why Doctor.
