Chips, yoghurt, prepared meals … Industrial food products must display a 5 color code to inform consumers of their composition and those which are most favorable to health. These 5-color codes will be used to give consumers the information they need to make informed dietary decisions for themselves and their families. They can easily compare the products with each other.
The High Council for Public Health (HCSP) has issued its opinion on the new regulations to facilitate consumer information on the nutritional quality of foods. After analyzing scientific studies and the report produced by ANSES on the nutritional score of the Food Standard Agency (FSA) and the objectives of the National Nutrition and Health Program (PNNS), it decided to set up a system of synthetic nutritional information based on a five-level color scale based on the FSA score.
“The mandatory nutrition declaration will be accompanied by a presentation in the form of graphics or symbols, on the front of the packaging in order to make it understandable by all”, according to a press release from the institution. This guidance would help consumers make informed choices for themselves and their families.
“This color coding system allows you to quickly identify the nutritional quality of supermarket products, but it also offers the possibility of comparing products of different brands to favor, for example, the less fat and less sweet cereal brands. or the Bolognese lasagna or the pizzas which have the best nutritional profile ”, explains in the press release, Professor Didier Jourdan, chairman of the prevention commission of the HCSP.
