It’s more than a hint
“It’s high time for a big party on the platform of the 718 with a naturally aspirated engine running at 9,000 rpm,” Porsches boss of all GT models Andreas Preuninger told TopGear. He’s obviously talking about the new Cayman GT4 RS. “This car is a live concert on four wheels. It’s such an entertainer.’ Snapped, but why the party? Because “the future of the mid-engine platform could have a lot to do with electricity,” he says.
So see the Cayman GT4 RS as a farewell party. The last big bang. Andreas Preuninger clearly hints at an electric Porsche Cayman. The rumor has been going on for some time and was recently rekindled when Porsche came up with the Mission R. The Cayman-sized electric race car would produce 1,000+ horsepower in qualifying mode, and about 600 horsepower in race specification. There is four-wheel drive and the car saves half an hour in full. For now, it remains a study model.
The electric Cayman uses parts of the Mission R
At the time, when TG Porsche asked if the Mission R (see gallery above) was an electric Porsche Cayman in disguise, Porsche said we’d likely see “elements of this in future production cars.” They later admitted they would “find a way to make a car like this a reality.”
Of course, the mission of the Mission R is to shape its own electric racing series for Porsche customers from 2025. In four years’ time, the company expects to have a new generation of batteries that provide greater range or weigh a lot less. It’s business where the next generation of Cayman benefits. And testing road components in race cars has been an industry standard since time immemorial. Are you looking forward to an electric Porsche Cayman?
