In a press release published on Monday, December 27, Afssaps and the Directorate General for Competition, Consumption and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) alerted consumers to the dangerous composition of hair straightening products.
Following alerts from European and American health authorities, a survey was therefore carried out among hairdressing professionals and sellers of these products. Results ? Eight hair straightening products containing formaldehyde at high concentrations have been detected and are in the process of being seized by the DGCCR.
These products, mainly intended for hairdressing professionals, are sold on the Internet and can be used by consumers themselves or by hairdressers at home. The products are used hot, using heated ceramic plates. The formaldehyde contained in the products can then rise in the ambient air.
This substance can be carcinogenic when breathed chronically. Formaldehyde is also suspected “in the occurrence of leukemia, sinus and nasal cavity cancers. In addition, it can induce eye and respiratory irritation or cause contact eczema” can be read in the press release. Afssaps.
It is therefore recommended to consumers and hairdressing professionals not to buy or use the products mentioned on the Afssaps site and to consult a doctor if you have symptoms during or following the use of these products. .
