A hearing in Reims was held on Monday to decide on the placement under supervision of Vincent Lambert. The final decision is expected to be made on March 10.
It was a date eagerly awaited by all of Vincent Lambert’s family. This 1er February, a hearing was held at the Court of Reims to decide on the placement under supervision of the patient, hospitalized at the University Hospital of Reims following a road accident, and in a vegetative state since 2008.
Last July, the European Court of Human Rights had validated the cessation of treatment, but Vincent Lambert’s medical team then seized a guardianship judge.
The idea was to appoint a tutor capable of making decisions on his behalf, and in particular to know if he should stay at the University Hospital of Reims, or if he should be transferred to a specialized center, for patients in a vegetative state. This is precisely what his parents are asking for, who indeed believe that the CHU, by deciding to stop treatment, does not provide him with quality care.
Decision in a few weeks
No formal decision emerged from this hearing. The designation of the guardian to the person has been postponed to March 10. However, the prosecutor has already requested that he be appointed outside the Lambert family, according to journalist Grégoire Amir-Tahmasseb, to the Union.
In fact, this request is rather rare, because such a guardian is often appointed within the family. However, when the interest of the person is a source of conflict within the family environment, as is the case here , appointing a third party is often the most acceptable solution.
The prosecutor is also asking that Vincent Lambert’s wife, Rachel, retain her title of tutor to property. This means that the latter will continue to manage the financial affairs of Vincent Lambert.
Rachel Lambert and part of her husband’s family oppose Lambert parents. They want the end of “therapeutic relentlessness”, and for them, the fact of appointing a guardian only delays the application of the decision rendered by the European Court of Human Rights, there are already six. month.
