Drinking 120 ml of pomegranate juice regularly and eating 3 dates would reduce the accumulation of fat in the arteries by 33% and reduce the risk of heart attacks, according to the results of an experiment conducted on mice.
Researchers at the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) carried out a laboratory study on arterial cells from mice with high cholesterol levels.
Test results revealed that the date-pomegranate juice mixture reduced oxidative stress on artery walls by 33% and lowered by 28% arterial cholesterol.
The main ingredients of pomegranate juice and dates are none other than plant polyphenolic antioxidants which reduce the oxidation process of the body and stimulate the elimination of cholesterol in the arteries. “Pomegranate juice and dates represent a powerful duo in the fight against heart disease because of their richness in phenolic antioxidants,” explains Professor Michael Aviram, director of the lipid research laboratory at Technion’s Faculty of Medicine and author of the study.
The right foods to fight bad cholesterol
Food can be a healthy ally, because a number of foods help fight bad cholesterol.
“There are other foods rich in fiber that help fight LDL cholesterol, oatmeal, oatmeal, kidney beans, pears, apples and barley” recalls Professor Michael Aviram .
The omega-3 rich foods are also a good way to reduce bad cholesterol (salmon, mackerel, river trout, herring, yellowfin tuna and halibut), as well as almonds and nuts rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids.
