The Geneva Motor Show will reopen its doors from February 19 to 27, 2022. This 91st edition aims to reinvent itself with fewer participants than usual. We take stock of the forces involved.
In mid-February 2022, the Geneva Motor Show will reopen its doors after two editions canceled in 2020, then 2021, due to the Covid-19. It is to say if this 91th edition of the GIMS (Geneva International Motors Show) is expected. By its reasonable size, its proximity to certain regions of France and above all by the diversity of the models exhibited, it had until then been preferred by visitors and journalists alike. Will this remain the case? Not sure, because the situation has changed. Indeed, if until then the Geneva Motor Show could count on 160 exhibitors, the 2022 edition will considerably reduce the wing with only 60 participants.
Renault: the only French present!
Concretely for the French manufacturers, if Renault and its Group (Alpine, Dacia and Lada) will indeed have a stand, its rival Stellantis will be conspicuous by its absence. And when you shred the brands of this new automotive giant, it figures quickly, very quickly. Thus, no Citroën, DS, Peugeot, Opel, or even Fiat exhibited during the Swiss event. Alfa Romeo and Maserati, who usually shone in the limelight by regularly offering us surprises and highlights (such as the Alfa Romeo 4C Concept in 2011, Tonale in 2019 or even the Maserati Alfieri in 2014), will not be in the game.

Are luxury brands leaving for Qatar?
And among the luxury brands, which until then took advantage of the Geneva setting, Ferrari, Bentley and Lamborghini have also withdrawn. Could it be to better take advantage, by concentrating their communication budget there, on the Qatari equivalent of the Geneva Motor Show which will take place in the Emirates in the fall? The hypothesis holds the rope, the countries of the Persian Gulf are much more attractive for these prestigious labels which, step by step, are abandoning old Europe.
The show’s attractions
However, visitors and potential customers alike who will be going to the Geneva Motor Show will be able to discover the novelties of the Bugatti, Rimac and Koenigsegg brands. Spread the word, there will still be supercars and hypercars unveiled in Switzerland. Phew, the tradition is not completely lost.

Just like that of the election of the car of the year whose 2022 winner, the one to succeed the Toyota Yaris, will be known when the show opens. And to end on the good news, let us quote the manufacturers present such as Audi, Cupra, Seat, Skoda and VW for the Volkswagen group as well as Kia. It will also be necessary to rely on new entrants such as the Hopium brands, including the Machina hydrogen sedan which will take its very first walkabout at a purely automobile show, and Softcar, the electric brand from Freiburg which will play almost at home.
Another regional stage, Rinspeed is also expected. At last, preparers like Mansory, traditionally unveiling their new achievements in spring in Geneva, will not miss the opportunity to do so in 2022.
