While nanoparticles are creeping more and more into our food products, cosmetics and other medicines, we still know very little about the effects they have on health. THE’UFC-What to Choose allowed itself to analyze the composition of 16 commonly used products in order to verify the presence, or not, of nanoparticles. The results are worrying: absolutely all of these products contained it.
6 products entirely in nanometric form
Nanoparticles are materials like silver, zinc, iron oxide, or silica that are transformed into very small nanometric particles. They have the particularity of having coloring or anti-caking properties but this small size favors their penetration into the body (lungs, skin, intestines). On this scale, they do not have the same physicochemical properties either, and their effects on our health and the environment are still very poorly understood. For 4 years, manufacturers have therefore been obliged to include the mention [nano] in the list of ingredients, but is this respected?
Of the 16 products tested by Que Choisir, all contained nanoparticles, but only 3 mentioned it on their packaging. Among the bad students are well-known products: M & M’s Peanuts, Sanex deodorant or Aquafresh toothpaste. The most amazing part concerns 6 other products where the materials used were 100% nanoparticles! There is a Casino soup, Ducros spices, a preparation for cappuccino, sunscreen or even lip stick and gloss. Following these observations, UFC-Que Choisir decided to file a complaint against 9 food manufacturers and cosmetics for “non-compliance with the legal obligation to report on the packaging”
