A new technology makes wireless charging for electric bicycles possible. The charging tile has to charge the bicycle battery by induction. To do this, the bicycle communicates with the charger via Bluetooth.
A yellow pavement tile with a green lamp from startup TILER at Delft University of Technology functions as a wireless charger for electric bicycles. The battery can remain on the bike while charging. That is better for the battery and it is safer and easier.
That is also the core of the idea: more user-friendly electric bicycles. This is important for making the Netherlands more sustainable, because electric bicycles can replace many of the Dutch car journeys, experts say.
To charge, park the bicycle with a bicycle charging stand on the tile. The green light turns blue, which means that the battery is charging more than 85 percent efficiently. The tile is connected to the power grid. Via Bluetooth, the bicycle communicates to the tile that the battery needs to be charged. A coil in the tile then generates a magnetic field that transfers the energy to a coil on the bicycle. According to the inventors, the system charges more efficiently than a plug, because a magnetic field does not lose energy through heat. After an hour of charging, the bike can go twenty kilometers.
