Initially, there were ten of them, today there are only two to hold on, on the verge of exhaustion. On hunger strike since October 30, these employees of the Bastia hospital seek to alert the public authorities to the economic situation of the establishment, according to the CGT.
The hospital centre’s debt amounts to 50 million euros, of which 29 million is a deficit with suppliers according to Corsica Morning. Viviane Albertelli, member of the staff for 40 years and leader of the CGT testifies to the daily: “I knew in 1992, the tragedy of Furiani. If an event of such magnitude, of 2300 wounded, still had to occur today, the hospital would not be able to cope with it “.
Consequences in the care of patients
Block rooms closed, lack of antibiotics and materials, delayed chemotherapy … Staff members denounce difficult working conditions which have consequences for patient care. According to the CGT, it would take 70 million euros to bring the hospital up to safety standards.
Thursday, November 17, cars occupied by hospital agents and trade unionists participated in a snail operation in the streets of Bastia. Their goal, to continue the fight of their colleagues, outside the walls of the hospital, to be better heard.
The Regional Health Agency (ARS), contacted by AFP, explains that the hospital has benefited since 2014 from a total budget of 29 million euros for the modernization and compliance of the establishment, including 11 million for the reconstruction of operating theaters, which will start next December. For the staff representatives, this is insufficient.
