Here is a study that will delight all chocolate addicts: according to the research of a nutrition and obesity specialist from the University of Sydney (Australia), Amanda Salis, snacking on a square of chocolate every day would be worse for your health than devouring the whole wafer at once.
How is it possible ? Quite simply thanks to adaptive thermogenesis, the phenomenon set up by our metabolism when we ingest a large number of calories at the same time. “The more kilojoules we bring to our body, the more it starts to burn. If you swallow the calories in your chocolate bar all at once, you will burn them faster than if you swallow them bit by bit, day by day “Explains Amanda Salis.
His nutrition expert colleague from Deakin University in Melbourne (Australia) somewhat moderates the results of this study and reminds us that, even swallowed in one go, the calories from the chocolate bar will not make you lose weight! “We have the capacity to absorb most of the nutrients we consume with food. Certainly, the metabolism speeds up when we swallow more calories, but this does not protect against weight gain”.
In France, chocolate consumption is 6.5 kg/year and per person. Compared to our European neighbors, this is not huge since we only occupy 8th place in the ranking of chocolate eaters. Far ahead of us, we find the Swiss, of course, closely followed by the Germans: they eat about 12 kg each per year, twice as much as we do. On the other hand, we are the country in Europe which consumes the most dark chocolate : it represents 30% of sales in France whereas it only reaches 5% in other European countries. That’s good: dark chocolate would protect the health of our arteries !
