To limit the use of drugs, and thus avoid side effects, French researchers are working on the development of a treatment composed of five plants and rich in polyphenol.
- Conducted on cells in vitro, the first tests would have allowed up to 40% reduction in cholesterol levels.
- Clinical trials on patients should soon follow and the results are expected in the second quarter of 2022.
- Called TOTUM 070, it is intended for patients with a light to moderate cholesterol level.
Nearly 20% of French people have too high a cholesterol level, according to the results of a study published in the Weekly epidemiological bulletin (BEH). Cholesterol is a fatty substance produced by our body. This is also found in food. When an individual has excess cholesterol in the blood, it is not a disease in itself but only a risk factor for other health problems, especially in the heart and blood vessels.
First encouraging results
A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can lower blood cholesterol levels. But, quite often, doctors end up prescribing drugs to patients despite their side effects. Recently, a study has suggested that these treatments may increase the risk of vascular dementia.
In order to avoid having recourse to these drug treatments, around twenty researchers from the Valbiotis company are working on the development of an anti-cholesterol treatment made from plants. On the occasion of a recent congress, they presented the first results which prove to be conclusive, reported France 3 Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Conducted on cells in vitro, the first tests would have allowed up to 40% reduction in cholesterol levels. Clinical trials on patients should soon follow and the results are expected in the second quarter of 2022.
five plants
The objective of the researchers is to develop a treatment which acts upstream in order to limit, or even reduce, the risk of cholesterol. Called TOTUM 070, it is intended for patients with a light to moderate cholesterol level.
This is made up of five plants and is rich in polyphenol, a family of organic molecules capable of reducing the risk factors for cardiovascular disease by promoting good glycemic balance and fighting against the oxidation of cholesterol. They also make it possible to reduce the obstruction of the arteries, to play on insulin resistance and on arterial hypertension.
