On the occasion of its think thank “Acting for equality”, the women’s magazine Marie Claire questioned French men and women on the subject of women and health. A total of 1,802 people were surveyed by the Harris Interactive polling institute. And the results, published on the weekly website this Tuesday, March 26, indicate that the population is well aware that the field of health is not spared by the inequalities between the sexes.
gendered protocols
Quite rightly, more than 8 out of 10 French men and women (87%) think that the symptoms of the same disease can manifest differently in men and women. They also share the idea that people can react differently to drugs, at 93%. So much so that 82% of men and 79% of women believe that the treatments are tested on volunteers of both sexes before they are marketed.
Unfortunately, this is not the case. They are mostly tested on men. For example, according to a tribune According to AXA Research Fund Director Marie Bogataj, only 35% of participants in cardiovascular disease research are women. However, they are more likely not to survive heart disease. “What to give a good food for thought to health professionals”score Marie Claire.
Targeted advertisements
And while information campaigns on prevention have multiplied, 76% of respondents say they are aware that they are the primary players in the preservation and maintenance of their health. Thus, 82% of women and 74% of men claim to make efforts to adopt a healthy lifestyle. For this, 84% of French women surveyed emphasize pay attention to their diet, compared to 76% of the French. A difference that can be explained in particular by advertising: women are more targeted by ads for diets.
The role of business
But respondents also highlight high expectations vis-à-vis their companies : provision of rest areas, healthy food, possibility of practicing sports activities… The people questioned regret that these possibilities are not offered to them. The development of nurseries is also considered a priority by 45% of the panel and by 50% of these ladies to improve the daily lives of employees.
More than two-thirds of women believe that companies’ efforts to prevent the various risks in the workplace remain “grossly insufficient”. 74% of the panel declare that the boxes do not act in the prevention of psychosocial risks. 64% in that of musculoskeletal disorders. 68% share this feeling for health in general.
Greater precariousness
Finally, women are more in favor of improvements from health players: 72% of them want better reimbursement for dental and optical care (compared to 59% of men), 62% better reimbursement for consultations with specialists (compared to 46%), 50% of free consultations (compared to 45%). They are in fact more often affected by precariousnessand are more likely to put their health on hold for lack of financial means.
