Bad range, it’s super annoying. That is why Motorola has developed this 5G neckband for an application that needs very good range.
The metaverse is ‘hot’. Every company is afraid of missing the boat and they jump on it en masse. Part of the metaverse includes VR and AR. All the big boys have already tried to sell the VR headsets to the masses. Without success, the reason was (partly) the good range that these devices need.
5G neckband
Google, Samsung, LG and Alcatel have all tried it. But Motorola and Verizon believe they have the answer to the biggest problem slowing down mainstream VR headset recording. Namely because they are often burdened by a whole series of components. The companies are announcing a “5G neckband” today. What they think headset makers would do is pack things like connectivity, processing and battery into the neckband and focus on making their heads-up displays lightweight and comfortable. However, would you walk around your neck with such a case?
Engadget has received the first image. In the image, we can see that the neckband is paired with a ThinkReality A3 headset. It is intended that it also works with other glasses. “We’re making 5G portable,” Verizon vice president of technology said.
Usable
Yep, it’s a step. To put on VR glasses and to put on a kind of necklace. The version in the pictures is black with red. On the right, you can connect headsets that are compatible with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon VR platform and Microsoft’s Remote Network Driver Interface (RNDIS). It also offers USB-C and DP1.4 connections. The neckband is still really in its early stages. Whether the companies will put the device into production should be clear from tests and responses from potential customers.
