5G will land in France, but its installation requires a higher frequency band than the mobile telephony currently in place, explains the site of AFP. So what are the health risks?
The frequency band that will be used by 5G will start at 3.4 gigahertz but will go up to 26 gigahertz. However, to do this it will be necessary to install new antennas. Because increasing the frequency decreases the range of the waves. Results ? NGOs are worried.
Our mobile phones will be connected to it, but also our televisions, our wi-fi or our radios, multiplying the sources of exposure to radio frequencies. For the moment, in the short term, no side effects have been highlighted.
Biological effects
But we are worried about long-term risks: it could be that these frequencies promote the appearance of brain tumors, underlined ANSES (Health Safety Agency) in a report dating from 2013. Technically, cell phones are already in the category “possibly carcinogenic to humans“according to the IARC, the agency specialized in cancer of the WHO.
There is indeed a proven biological effect, these waves can have effects on sleep or tension. But that doesn’t mean health is at risk, experts say. The question that remains unanswered is whether the biological effects that 5G can cause will be greater than our body’s ability to adapt to it. A more in-depth study on the possible risks is being carried out by ANSES and should be published at the end of 2020.
