Salmonella is a bacterium responsible forfood poisoning which can prove fatal. Public Health France estimates that foodborne infectious diseases kill on average 250 people each year in France and are the cause of 17,600 hospitalizations.
In investigating this topic, France Inter journalists discovered that in 2015 and 2016, about ten people died and nearly 80 were hospitalized, after being contaminated by raw milk cheese, in particular Morbier and Mont d’Or, made in France Comté. An outbreak caused by Salmonella Dublin bacteria.
Controls have since been multiplied by five
Five cheese dairies were identified at the time by the Population Protection Department (DDPP) of Franche-Comté. About sixty brands of raw milk cheese were then concerned but no general alert was given on the precautions to be taken.
This crisis salmonella was nevertheless followed by a strengthening of control measures among producers of raw milk cheeses. These checks were multiplied by five from the start of 2016. An investment that has paid off because no salmonella contamination has been detected on raw milk cheese for two years.
