The yoga practice is recommended to prevent cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension or cholesterol. This was discovered by Dr. Myriam Hunink, a researcher at the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam. It analyzed the impact of this alternative medicine on cardiovascular health by examining 37 studies based on nearly 3,000 people.
In the scientific journal European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, the study concludes that yoga is as beneficial as jogging or brisk walking in terms of cardiovascular prevention. Its practice is associated with a lower risk of obesity, lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
The reasons underlying these virtues lack scientific demonstration. The anti-stress intake could be the cause since we know that stress promotes cardiovascular disease. The strengths of yoga could also come from the joint work of breathing and muscle strengthening, which brings more oxygen to the body and helps lower blood pressure.
This Dutch study is not the first to extol the benefits of yoga for health. It would be particularly recommended for relieve back pain, treat urinary incontinenceor help the fibromyalgia patients.
