Winter tires will be compulsory in mountainous areas from November 1, 2021. New road signs will appear in 48 departments to inform motorists of entry and exit areas.
From 1er Next November, the prefects of 48 French departments located in mountainous areas will be able to rely on decree n ° 2020-1264 (OJ of October 16, 2020) to make winter tires compulsory. However, it remains to inform motorists of the roads concerned.
An obligation of 1er November to March 31
Thanks to a decree of 23 June 2021, these prefects now have signs to be placed along the roads to indicate the entry (B58) and exit (B59) of areas in which winter tires are compulsory. These signs can be supplemented by smaller ones placed below: some displaying the dates of this obligation (from 1/11 to 31/3), others informing that all the communes of the department are concerned (mention: “On the whole of the department”).
Chains and socks still allowed
If you are just passing through these departments, a pair of chains or socks will be perfectly acceptable, but without offering the same versatility as winter tires. As for tires carrying the M + S, M&S or MS indication, they will be tolerated as is until November 2024, date on which they must necessarily be associated with the “alpine symbol”.
