And others often warm
There are people who are always hot. In the winter they still walk around in a T-shirt and cycle around in their summer coats when it’s only ten degrees. While others are always cold. By default, they turn the heating up a degree and you can already see in the autumn in a thick down jacket and gloves. Why is one person cold and the other always warm?
Your body temperature is determined by, among other things, your weight and height, but also your age, gender, eating habits, sleep rhythm and lifestyle are of influence. Human body temperature fluctuates around 37 degrees. Its regulation starts in your brain and is controlled by hormones. These hormones take into account the internal temperature of the body and the temperature of the outer layers of the skin.
Sex
Women generally get cold faster than men. This is due to estrogens, the female sex hormones. These also play an important role in the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. They occur in the body of men in much lower concentrations. Estrogens affect your body temperature, causing it to fluctuate throughout the cycle. During menstruation, the core temperature of women is on average one degree lower.
Muscle mass also plays a role. Muscle mass produces heat. Men naturally have more muscle mass than women. This makes men less likely to get cold. When the muscles are put to work, they generate heat.
cold hands
Many women often have cold hands. Researchers at the University of Utah found that women’s hands have an average temperature of 30.7 degrees, while men’s is 1.6 degrees higher at 32.3 degrees. A woman’s body has to work harder to keep the body temperature high. As a result, there is less energy left to keep limbs such as hands and feet warm.
Weight
People who are heavier feel warmer because their internal organs are warmer. But their limbs are actually colder. Slimmer people, on the other hand, are more likely to feel cold, because blood flowing through the limbs must be warmed before it is pumped back. The internal temperature of the body is regulated by cells in the skin. These detect cold, cause hair and blood vessels to narrow, which slows down the speed of blood circulation.
Luck
Your sense of happiness also has an influence, according to Canadian researchers. They discovered that people who are surrounded by family and friends and who feel happy are also often warmer.
