Researchers wanted to know why some music makes us unbearable while others enchant us. They therefore conducted in-depth interviews on the musical tastes of 21 people, synthesized them and published their findings in the journal PLOS ONE.
Social influence
“Divided into five age groups, respondents were asked to prepare a list of music they disliked, and for each item they were asked why they disliked it,” explain the scientists.
“When we studied their responses, we were able to identify four main reasons for their auditory aversions: the music itself, the lyrics, the artist’s performance, and the people listening to it,” explains Julia Merrill, director of the study. The arguments identified were therefore classified into three broad categories: object-related reasons, subject-related reasons and social reasons.

Respondents also described different emotional, bodily and social reactions that were triggered when listening to unloved music, some going so far as to leave the room where it resonates, or even break up with social relations having likes. divergent.
“Music aversions perform functions similar to those of listening to a song one likes, such as maintaining good humor, expressing and constructing identity, strengthening the cohesion of the group and social distinction”, conclude the researchers.
