He ended the suspense. For several months, Prime Minister Édouard Philippe has sported a white-pigmented beard. In an interview with Paris Match, he lifted the veil on the reasons behind this depigmentation. “It’s a disease — vitiligo — not serious, neither painful nor contagious.“, he confided. The Prime Minister went on to say that he had no intention of shaving her.

A revolutionary treatment
Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disease that occurs when pigment-bearing cells die or are unable to function normally. As we have seen on the Prime Minister, vitiligo evolves in flare-ups and gains ground little by little. These pushes are favored by several factors such as stress, anxiety, or psychological shock. Édouard Philippe did not mention the reasons for his depigmentation, but several specialists mention stress and fatigue as the main reason for the onset of the disease.
This disease affects 0.5% of the world’s population and can develop at any age, although there is a predominance of cases in those under 20 years of age. A revolutionary treatment has shown the effectiveness of a cream to treat the disease. Ruxolitinib was tested for two years by a team of researchers from Tufts Medical Center (USA). About half of the patients saw their facial vitiligo decrease by half (50%), compared to 3% for the placebo group, with few side effects.
Several personalities came out of the silence
Édouard Philippe is not the first public figure to talk about this disease. Earlier this year, it was the singer Pomme who confessed to having vitiligo. A few years ago, it was the American model Breanne Rice who admitted to having the disease, after having hidden it for several years. Canadian model Winnie Harlow is perhaps the most iconic public figure with vitiligo.
