In fact, this special edition of ‘DigiArt’ PostNL stamps does not resemble anything at all. And that’s exactly the point!
Stamps, a somewhat outdated concept. Yes, you still need them for sending letters, but that too is no longer the freshest concept we know. Yet attention is still paid to stamps and it is nice to dress them up a bit. Iconic Dutch objects, King Willem-Alexander, special editions for the holidays, we see it all on our own stamps.
DigiArt stamps
However, PostNL is now coming up with a special set of stamps. The DigiArt stamp sheet is five stamps that have nothing to do with iconic Dutch objects or our king. In fact, what it says looks like nothing at all, like asking a brainless person to sketch something random. Funnily enough, that’s exactly what it is.
Algorithm
PostNL claims to have a world first with the DigiArt stamps: this is the first set of stamps designed by a self-learning algorithm. The project to design these stamps is led by Tim Ottens who is a data scientist at PostNL’s Analytics & Decisions department. By getting to know the old stamps, the machine was able to design a set of stamps that you see here. The DigiArt stamps are similar to what we know, but at the same time not at all.
It was a proof of Ottens himself, but PostNL thought the idea was fun enough to issue the stamps. This is done with texts such as ‘world first’. Well, it’s a bit like putting a turbo engine in a horse-drawn carriage, that would also be a world first. However, the idea is certainly nice and if you want the stamps, they cost 4.80 euros PostNL’s website.
