To stay in shape, it’s best to get up early. A good habit that would be felt on your weight, according to a recent Finnish study.
Sleep, diet and weight are closely linked
The earlier you get up in the morning, the lower your risk of becoming obese. In any case, this is what Finnish researchers suggest, who have just published a study on the subject in the journal Obesity. This publication is the first to determine a link between sleep pattern and weight gain.
To illustrate their thesis, these researchers from the National Institute of Health and Welfare in Helsinki looked at data from a study conducted in 2007, which looked at the health of 1,854 people. aged 25 to 74. By observing the questionnaires to which these participants had been submitted, the authors of the study tried to cross-check information related to weight, information related to diet and information about sleep pattern.
Getting up late encourages less physical activity
It turned out that people who used to go to bed and get up early generally had a better lifestyle. The proportion of overweight or obese people was also significantly lower in this category of participants.. In contrast, the proportion of overweight or obese people was highest among participants whose sleep patterns involved going to bed later to get up later in the morning.
To explain this phenomenon, researchers put forward the idea that early risers are less likely to consume sugary or fatty foods in the morning and at the end of the day. A habit that would also be felt throughout the rest of their day. Night owls are also less likely to participate in regular physical activity.
