The truncated version of the XC40
TopGear just got out of the new Volvo C40. You can read the full test report in our December issue (in stores at the end of November); now the highlights.
Test object: Volvo C40
Performance: Recharge Twin Engine
Location: Ghent and surroundings
Weather conditions: cool and rainy
What exactly is this?
In line with current fashion, this is the coupé version of the Volvo XC40. And it must be said: where we usually find these types of body styles both nonsensical and ugly, only the first applies to this Volvo. He looks particularly good, if you ask us.
Is the Volvo C40 the same as the XC40?
In addition to the unique rear, the grille, front bumper and headlights are not interchangeable. The interior differs in details and leather is no longer supplied. There are seven colors (including this beautiful Fjord Blue) and two types of wheels – nice and simple. Furthermore, the C40 is only available as a fully electric Recharge. The XC40 is also available in a petrol and hybrid version, and as a Recharge with one engine. The C40 always has two for the time being.
It’ll come in handy, surely?
408 hp and 660 Nm, so yes: in 4.9 seconds you are at 100 km/h. Intermediate accelerations at higher speeds are also effortless. Next to the Tesla Model 3, the 40-series Volvos (and the Polestar 2) are the fastest EVs you can buy in this price range. The chassis is fairly sturdy and the handling is confidence inspiring. The Volvo C40 is also very quiet and, due to its aerodynamic shape, it comes even slightly further (okay, 2 percent) on a charge than the XC40.
Any cons?
Yes, the ergonomics. According to Volvo, it is an excellent idea to have the function to drive with or without strong regeneration/braking action (one pedal driving) in the Google infotainment menus. We don’t think so – you want something so important within reach. Other things (no range in your counter screen…) are also quite clumsy or cumbersome. The funny thing is that Volvo deliberately designed them this way, ‘to keep everything simple’. Works quite counterproductive.
What does the Volvo C40 cost?
Volvo supplies the C40 from 57,950 euros, or 60,150 euros in Belgium. That is respectively 1,500 and 1,150 euros more expensive than the cheapest comparable XC40, so you do not have to leave it. Or be hip and take out a ‘subscription’ on the car for a certain monthly amount – that’s also possible.
