Volkswagen will have taken time but this time it’s the right one: the modern Combi arrives in 2022. It will be 100% electric, integrated into the ID range. A first illustration allows us to imagine its design while the prototypes make a few turns of the wheels for the final tests.
Twenty years after the first modern Combi concept, Volkswagen is preparing (finally!) To market the production model. Since the 2001 Microbus prototype, things have changed a lot. The future Bulli, scheduled for 2022, will be closer to the ID concept. Buzz of 2017. As often, the engineers took the wheel of camouflaged prototypes to carry out the final tests before the presentation of the production model and its marketing next year. Enough to allow illustrators to imagine the vehicle thanks to their graphic palette.
A look close to the ID concept. Buzz of 2017
Unsurprisingly, the minibus is part of the ID electric range. of Volkswagen, and should thus resume features close to ID.3 and ID.4. LED headlights will be similar. The light strip that connects them will integrate the brand’s logo in the center. At the bottom of the shield, a more openwork bumper adopts diamonds of different sizes. The profile is almost identical to that of the ID concept. Buzz, with nevertheless some revised details such as the side window or the tailgate, as well as the higher loading threshold. The horizontal lights at the rear are reminiscent of those of the new Multivan. However, they should be connected by a light strip. Inside, little information at the moment: we just know that the 100% electric model should take over the dashboard of the Volkswagen ID. 4.
Two sizes and up to 375 hp
In the future, the Bulli will be offered in a “short” variant for Europe below 5 m long, while the United States will be entitled to a declination extended to more than 5 m including 3 m of wheelbase. On the other hand, the two models will be based on the same MEB platform, dedicated to the Volkswagen group’s electrics and shared with many models from now on. The future Bulli could be the most powerful of the range with up to 375 hp, while the ID.4 GTX stops at 299 hp. Autonomy would also be increased to nearly 600 km thanks to a 62 kWh or 88 kWh battery.
